What actually is Self Care? *According to Yale’s ‘The Science of Well-Being for Parents’

We made a pact at Mother Brand that we would never stop learning and always stay curious. That’s why we loved deep diving into The Science of Well-Being for Parents course run by the prestigious Yale University.

The course overall is brilliant, however the module on parent self care rang true in a million different ways. The course is run by Professor of Psychology, Laurie Santos. She explains to parents that self care has become synonymous with bubble baths and spa days - but it’s far more than that.

Check out these top 5 behaviours that can make us feel nourished (a core part of self care), and take some time to figure out what they could look like for you.

  1. Social Connection - even if it’s talking to the barista when you get a coffee.

  2. Doing nice things for others - voluntarily

  3. Move your body - and learn about hormetic stress

  4. Get some rest - it’s unsustainable not to

  5. Take a mindfulness break - even 2 deep breaths can reset your system.
